Our Journey is on its Way

Welcome and thank you for wanting to join us on our journey to Detroit. Our group is filled with students from a variety of different backgrounds. Even though we have different views, all of us have one goal. We all strive to be in solidarity with the citizens of Detroit. While on our service trip, we will be focusing on how the racial divide of the city affects residents’ food security and how local, urban farming is changing the landscape of the city.

Over the course of our pre-trip group meetings, we hope to accomplish different things. We want to grow closer as a group, but more importantly, to learn about the issues that are already occurring in the city.

Tonight, we have our second group meeting as a group. Tonight, we discussed which Catholic Social Teaching themes applied to our trip and discussed the relationship between food and culture in our own lives. Two weeks ago, we had first meeting together, during which we got to know each other and learned a little more about our host partner, Earthworks Urban Farm. You can learn more about them, too! Check them out in this YouTube video, which we watched and reflected on at one of our meetings:
